Day 11 Pray for Our Government

Pray for Our Government

‘I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful lives in all godliness and holiness’    1 Timothy 2:1,2

Christians rarely pray for their government, despite how strong a priority Paul makes it here.

Paul’s approach is a reminder of how God wanted His people to react while in captivity in Babylon.

Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper’ (Jeremiah 29:7)

This doesn’t mean we’re to sit quietly when governments enact legislation that goes right against God’s standards. But it does mean we’re not to attack individual politicians and automatically paint them black every time. Many Christians have done that about former Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and yet have made no mention of her consistent stand against gay marriage.

Former American President Bill Clinton contacted the Christian writer, Phillip Yancey, thanking him for his book “What’s So Amazing About Grace?” Clinton’s letter expressed his frustration with some American Christian groups who utterly wiped him when he was reaching out to both God and God’s people for help. Many simply wrote Clinton off.

Begin to pray for the government and for our politicians. God knows they sure need it!
