Day 17 Angels

Angels

In the Old Testament the mercy seat sat on top of the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle. The High Priest was only permitted to see it once a year on the Day of Atonement. He had to sprinkle the blood of the sacrifice onto its top. Under the mercy seat was the copy of the Law God had cut out of the rock for Moses. This sprinkling of the sacrificial blood was to cover the sins of the people through the year.

On the top of the mercy seat were two engraved angels, one on each side, with their wings touching in the middle (Exodus 25:18-21). Does it strike you as unusual that the place of God’s presence (above the mercy seat: Exodus 25:22) was pictured by angels? Angels belong in God’s realm, so when God determined to presence Himself in the midst of Israel’s camp, it followed that He chose angels to be carved from gold to typify His presence.

And as if that wasn’t sufficient, God instructed that pictures of angels be woven into the fabric of the veil around the Tabernacle (Exodus 26:31). Where God is, there are angels.

Few churches emphasise angels in their preaching, but they shouldn’t be ignored either. Don’t go looking for angels, but rest assured that there are millions of angels ministering on earth. Many of us have probably seen angels without realising because they appeared as human beings. God loves you and cares deeply for you. And to show how much, He’s got angels watching over you right now.
