The Fear of God
‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom’
Proverbs 9:10
When the book of Proverbs talks about wisdom, it is describing what we might call integrity or righteousness. Wisdom was demonstrated by a lifestyle that honoured God. Walking in wisdom was walking with God. Wisdom was not a quality of our mind as much as it was an upright way of living with God at the centre.
So why is the fear of the Lord the beginning of wisdom?
God’s way is separate to man’s way. Man has polluted the earth with his ways. So the world goes one way and God another. To be able to walk in wisdom (righteousness) we must walk with God, a God whose way is separate to the world.
So to walk in wisdom we begin by relating to a holy God whose presence brings a true fear to our heart. To walk in wisdom is to walk in the fear of God. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
