Know the Holy Spirit
I will ask the Father and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
Can we know the Holy Spirit? Not “can we know that He exists?” but “can we know the Holy Spirit – in the same way we can know Jesus?” Emphatically, yes we can!
Jesus said to his disciples ‘But you know him …’ speaking about the Holy Spirit. The word translated ‘know’ means “a growing knowledge, a growing understanding, a realisation.” So knowing the Holy Spirit means a progressive knowing. We don’t one moment not know Him and the next moment know Him completely. We get to know Him.
The word was used when “what” or “who” was known was of great importance to the one growing in this “knowing.” So growing in our knowledge of the Holy Spirit goes hand in hand with valuing Him highly. Anyone who puts little or no value in knowing the Spirit will hardly grow in their knowledge of Him.
Jesus wanted His disciples to both value the Holy Spirit and grow in their understanding and knowledge of Him. If it was that important for the disciples, it’s just as important for us today.
