Day 23 Our Greatest Satisfaction

Our Greatest Satisfaction

The Oscar winning movie, Chariots of Fire, tells the story of two athletes at the 1920 Paris Olympics. Harold Abrahams, after a gigantic struggle as much against himself as against the other runners, won the gold medal in the 100 yards. Eric Liddell, the Christian who had refused to run on a Sunday, swapped events and won the gold in the 440 yards. The double story depicted in the movie is all the more moving because the story is true.

After the Games were over the movie shows all the athletes returning to London and spilling out excitedly onto Waterloo Station – all except Harold Abrahams. His girlfriend waits anxiously as the crowd thins out. Only when they’ve all gone does Harold emerge slowly from the train. He has achieved what he set out to do. He has the gold medal in his hand. He has been to the mountain top but knows that no matter what he does now, he will never stand there again. He has everything but in a strange sort of way he knows he has very little.

What brings you most satisfaction? Your answer reveals where your heart is. To some it’s money or security. To others it’s love and family. Others might find their greatest satisfaction in taking on new challenges and developing inner strengths.

The Christian leader, John Piper, is best known for this amazing statement ‘God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.’ The deepest and most fulfilling satisfaction possible for a human being is found in the most intimate, personal relationship with Christ.

What brings you the most satisfaction? The more you grow in Christ, the more honestly you will answer “Jesus Christ does.”
