The Warning
The following is an actual account of what happened on the bridge of an American battleship in thick fog at night.
“Light bearing on the starboard bow” called the man on lookout.
“Is it steady or moving astern?” the captain barked back.
“Steady captain” which meant the ship was on a collision course.
“Signal that ship: we are on collision course, advise you change course twenty degrees” the agitated captain yelled to the signalman.
Back came the signal: “Advise you change course twenty degrees.”
Undaunted the captain spat out: “Send: I’m a battleship. Change course twenty degrees.”
Back came the flashing light, “I’m a lighthouse”
The battleship changed course.
There is a constant battle going on inside us between the kingdom of self and the kingdom of God. Everything God does is to move us away from self-centredness to God-centredness. This battle will rage all our life. Our resistance to God’s grace draws the intensity of the struggle out even more. We may think we’re a battleship. But don’t forget, God’s the lighthouse!
