Those Who Mock Jesus
The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophecy! Who hit you?” And they said many other insulting things to him. Luke 22:63-65
The guards mocked Jesus’ prophetic gifting. It was a cruel game to them. They blindfolded Him and then challenged Him to tell prophetically which guard had struck the last blow.
Jesus says nothing. He could have called on angels who would have created a bloodbath. Everyone would have been decimated.
But instead he takes their punches. The amazing thing in this story is that in the verses immediately before (Luke 22:55-62), Peter has three times denied Jesus – just as Jesus had prophesied (Luke 22:31-34). So inside the building the guards mock the prophet who won’t prophecy while outside the building the word of God’s ultimate prophet to humanity is being perfectly fulfilled.
Jesus is mocked today in cartoons, television, movies, books and magazines – in every form of media. Wherever the human heart is exposed, Jesus is ridiculed. It’s hard to sit back and watch it happen.
There’s a time to speak and a time to be silent but there’s never a time to deny Jesus.
