Day 4 Loved and Called to be Saints

Loved and Called to be Saints

To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints Romans 1:7a

In this first half of verse 7 Paul writes two things about his readers. They are first of all ‘loved by God’ (1:7). Do you ever dwell on how much God loves you and how tenderly and constantly He shows that love? Do difficult circumstances make you doubt God’s love for you? John’s gospel and letters speak more of God the Father’s love and Jesus the Son’s love for us than other New Testament writings. Immerse yourself in this truth that God loves you.

The devil’s greatest attack on you will be to make you doubt the love of God. The devil will go from whispering in your ear to downright shouting every time something goes wrong for you. Hold on to the love of God so tightly that nothing the enemy of your soul throws at you can pry this great truth away from your heart.

Secondly, they are ‘called to be saints’ (1:7). ‘Saints’ or ‘holy people’ was a common term for Israel (Exodus 19:6). These Gentile Christians are now also saints. All Christians, without exception, are called by God to belong to Jesus Christ and to be His holy people.

The emphasis is more on being set apart for God’s purpose than outworked Christ-likeness. But knowing that God already sees us as set apart will soon change the way we speak and act. Knowing we are set apart makes it easier to choose Christ’s pathway for us.

Christian, you are loved and you are set apart for God’s purposes.
