Making a Difference
An old man was walking down a beach not long after dawn. He noticed a teenager ahead of him picking up starfish from the sand and throwing them into the deeper water. As he came up beside him, the old man asked what he was doing. The young man explained that the starfish would die once the morning sun’s heat hit them.
“But the beach is so long and there must be thousands of them” countered the old man. “Do you really think your effort will make a difference?”
The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and gently threw it into the safety of the waters beyond the breaking waves. “It makes a difference to this one.”
What difference can you and I make to a world of almost seven billion people? Maybe not much, but we can sure make a difference to people we meet on a day to day basis. Even if we can’t make a difference to the whole world, we can still make a difference in our world.
