Day 3 God Never Gives Up

God Never Gives Up

Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there;

if I make my bed in the depths, you are there’

Psalm 138:7,8

David was not trying to get away from God. Reading through the whole psalm makes it abundantly clear he was in awe of God’s ability to be wherever any human could ever go. No one would ‘flee’ to heaven to escape God; heaven is His domain. But nor does the grave remove us from God (‘the depths’ means the grave and infers ‘death’).

Our society is both materialistic and spiritually blind. Our society is filled with people who only believe in what they can see, hear, smell, taste or touch. And yet as Christians, living everyday in this society, we know the Holy Spirit is everywhere (omnipresent). There’s nowhere we can go where He isn’t there already.

The weakness of our humanity sometimes pulls back from God’s inescapable Presence, wanting to hide our sin and failing. But in our wisest moments (or most desperate), we have much reason to be glad that He never gives up, that He never stops pursuing, and that there is no imprisoning force on earth or in hell that He can’t penetrate, conquer and overthrow.
