Not Our Message – His Message
Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Revelation 2:4
This corrective word to the church in Smyrna hides an extraordinary truth.
First love is the initial love a couple has for each other. First love is usually marked by constant displays of affection, continually telling the other person how much you love them, desperately wanting to be with them, selflessness so they can have what you have, giving time and gifts … And the list goes on.
This church had forsaken this kind of love for Jesus. They had “settled down” into the hum-drum of life.
But first love involves two people. The church had lost its first love for Jesus but Jesus had not lost His first love for the church. Jesus loved this church (as each of the churches) with first love.
Jesus loves the church today with first love.
Jesus loves you with first love.
Jesus wants to tell you over and over how much He loves you. He wants to be with you all the time. He’s the most selfless human that’s ever lived and longs to give you the abundance of all He has. He has gifts galore and they’re for you. He thinks about you all the time. He can’t get you out of His mind.
This is first love. This is Jesus’ first love for you. He’s never “gotten over” you. He’ll never forget you. He’s never left you behind.
Jesus loves you with first love.
