Day 7 The Opened Eyes

The Opened Eyes

Then the eyes of both of them were opened …’ Genesis 3:7

Then their eyes were opened …’ Luke 24:31

The first meal mentioned in the Bible is markedly significant. ‘When the woman saw … the fruit of the tree … she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realised they were naked …’ (Genesis 3:6,7). Death traces its very beginnings to this moment of disobedience. The whole creation is now subjected to decay, futility and sorrow.

This is how Luke describes the first meal of the new creation. ‘… he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him …’ (Luke 24:31). The couple on the Emmaus road, probably Cleopas and Mary, discover that death has been defeated. God’s new creation has begun, breaking in on the old world of decay and sorrow. Jesus has been raised from the dead.

The first meal of the old creation was in the presence of Satan. The first meal of the new creation is in the presence of Jesus.

The result of the first meal? ‘… they realised they were naked.’ The result of the second meal? ‘… they recognised him’ (Jesus).

We see either our sin or our Saviour. Thankfully, we see Jesus!
