Day 13 Pentecost

Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost came, they were together in one place    Acts 2:1

Pentecost was celebrated fifty days after Passover. These festivals served as reminders to the Jews of their great exodus from Egypt around 1500 years earlier.

Passover was the time when lambs were sacrificed and the Israelites were saved from the avenging angel that killed the Egyptian first born. God’s people left Egypt immediately, passing through the Red Sea and into the Sinai Desert.

After fifty days they came to Mount Sinai, where Moses received God’s Law, His instruction for how Israel was to live as His people.

Paralleling Moses going up onto the mountain, Jesus had ascended into heaven. Moses came down with the Law. Jesus will come down through the power of the Holy Spirit – not with the written law carved on tablets of stone but with the dynamic power to live out God’s will written on human hearts.

The Jews were called to live by the Law. We are called to live by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16).

The Jews were called to obey the Law. We are called to obey the Spirit (Galatians 5:25).
