Day 8 Talents

Talents

The growth of the orphanages under George Mueller was extraordinary. In 1837 there were three, housing 81 children and 9 staff. Over the two years between August 1838 and August 1840, the ministry was reduced to being penniless a full fifty times. A fourth orphanage was added in 1844 bringing the total number of children to 130. Five years later there was another building added and the number of children was up to 300. By 1862, and with two more orphanages, there were 1050 children. By 1860, more than 2000 children were under Mueller’s care.

But his supreme desire was always for the salvation of the orphans, and over the years the vast majority responded. Even some who left unconverted (many reacted to the strict discipline) could not escape the power of persevering prayer, and came to Christ later. The homes weathered scarlet fever outbreaks and basked in great revival movings. In seasons of God’s movings in their midst, hundreds were converted in a single year.

In Jesus’ parable of the talents in Matthew 25, the three slaves were given differing amounts of money, according to their different abilities – one five talents, one two and one was given one talent. A talent was silver that equalled around a day’s wage. You and I have been given gifts and abilities by God that we need to discover and work with. Don’t look at someone else who you think has five talents and lament that you don’t have what they’ve got. We will all give an account of how we used what we’ve been given. We’re not all like George Mueller but we’re all called to be faithful. What are you doing with what you’ve got?
