Day 6 God’s Provision

God’s Provision

The orphanages run by George Mueller saw remarkable provision through prayer. Throughout the years, the meals (which were plain and repetitive) were always served on time. One morning the tables were all set for breakfast but the cupboard was totally bare. So was the cash box. The children were standing, waiting for breakfast when Mueller said, “Children you know we must be in time for school.” Then lifting his head he prayed very simply, “Dear Father, we thank Thee for what Thou art going to give us to eat.” There was a knock at the door. It was the local baker. “Mr. Mueller, I could not sleep last night. Somehow I felt you didn’t have any bread for breakfast, and the Lord wanted me to send you some. So I got up at 2 am and baked some fresh bread and here it is.” Then there was a second knock. It was a milkman whose cart had broken down right outside the orphanage. He wanted to unload his supply of milk so he could get his cart repaired. The children had more than enough for that day’s meals.

We can hear amazing testimonies like this and think “God why don’t you do that for me?” There are two obvious answers. Firstly, you and I aren’t looking after an orphanage. But beyond that, God has done extraordinary things for us over our lifetime. People who share testimonies of God’s miraculous provision are so often people who write in a journal everything God does for them – the little things we mightn’t even recognise as being ‘God’ and the bigger obvious miracles. Learn to do the same. Begin a spiritual journal, and watch your heart grow in appreciation for God’s gracious bounty to you.
