Day 3 Judgement Day

Judgement Day

We live in an unjust world where wrongs continue, often unchecked.

So does that mean God is waiting until Judgement Day to put all that’s wrong – right, or does He intervene in the here and now? The answer is: “both.” More times than we would realise He intervenes in history. And every other injustice will be fully dealt with on Judgement Day.

What makes God intervene now? One key is Genesis 18:20,21 ‘Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me.’ It was not just the sin of the twin cities but ‘the outcry against’ them.

The word for ‘outcry’ means a cry of pain, a cry of help from those being oppressed or violated. It was used of the Israelites crying out in their slavery (Exodus 2:23). Different psalmists used it when they were crying out to God because they were being treated unjustly (e.g. Psalm 34:17). Most graphically, it was the scream of a woman being raped (Deuteronomy 22:24,27).

Sodom and Gomorrah are used through the rest of the Old Testament to picture not only perverted and violent sexual crime (Genesis 19:4), but idolatry (Deuteronomy 29:23), bloodshed and corruption (Isaiah 1:9-23), and arrogance, affluence and hardheartedness toward the needy (Ezekiel 16:48). These last three particularly – being proud, overfed and unconcerned – describe the world we live in.

Don’t let this world squeeze you into its mould. Don’t think you can’t change anything; you can. Get upset with society’s sin. Stand up on the inside. Talk to God about your world. He might just be waiting for one more ‘outcry’ before He intervenes.
